5 persuasive and 5 informative advertisements

Persuasive ads!

As you can see, these ads all contain simple yet creative visuals with little words, but somehow manages to entice people to try that product/service.

Informative ads!

These ads generally contain more words than the persuasive ones, and the main aim is to inform or educate people about a new product or its features. However informative ads can also be simple, as seen in the McDonald's one, where it informs people of its new outlet.

5 illustration styles!!!

Okay so we formed into groups of 4 and had to go to the library to look for 5 samples of current illustration styles in magazines and here are the results!

This is an example of photorealism, which is a form of painting based off actual photographs. The beautiful thing about photorealism is that it is painted so well that it looks exactly like a photograph, and requires a highly skilled artist to execute it.

This is a really cartoonish, fun and vibrant advertisement that is used to grab people's attention. It also suits the message of the advertisement, which aims to let people have fun by offering travel deals. This is done by using bright colors as well as the cartoon-like illustrations.

This magazine page contains 4 different illustration styles in itself. The top left picture if the man is a simple portrait, and to its right is a form of surrealism. The bottom left picture of the bird is an example of a minimalist image, where simple images are used to convey a strong message, in this case the message is save the world by saving electricity. The last picture is a water color painting, and is very well done as it effectively conveys how the man in the picture is feeling.

This is a very plain and simple advertisement. It doesn't have stunning visuals or any underlying meanings but instead it is very good in sending people the message, which is to plan early for your retirement.

Lastly, this is an informative advertisement, and is relatively word heavy when compared to the other advertisements above. This is an advertisement informing people about an app that allows people to feel like a police, and telling them the steps involved. I think this advertisement is good in a way that the visuals at the centre helps to balance out the words, thus people will not get bored from seeing it.

InDesign!

So we started learning Indesign and I think its pretty easy to use, especially when compared to illustrator. Indesign is mainly used for creating layouts in magazines for example, and is more text heavy, whereas photoshop focuses more in the visual aspect etc. Here is a really great brochure tutorial using Indesign and I found this really useful so I just thought I'd share it. part 1  part 2

Orchard Road field trip part 4

Original advertisement

Sketch of possible improved version

I feel that in the original advertisement the focus was more on the man, and not on the food. In the improved advertisement the food is almost the same size as the man, and not at the bottom, thus people will notice it.

Lastly, my favorite mall in the Orchard Road stretch was Ion Orchard. Not only is it the most unique on terms of design, but it is also the brightest among all other malls at Orchard, making it hard to miss. Where other malls have plain rectangular frames and simple designs, Ion Orchard is circular in nature and also has a huge LED wall where ads can be played, making it extremely eye-catching. The exterior of the building also has a very futuristic feel to it, and even though the mall has a weird shape, its layout is very easy to navigate about. I also love the towering canopy structure at the sheltered outdoor space as it resembles a tree, giving the building a sense of balance. The glass panels and numerous lighting makes the building look more like a 3-D work of art, which is why I like Ion Orchard the best.

Orchard Road field trip part 3 Forever 21

Lastly, these are advertorials and in-store decorations found in the Forever 21 stall at Ion Orchard. The Forever 21 stall is very brightly lit, with lots of white lighting and the colorful clothes gives the stall a very playful feel overall. The 3 advertorials all stick to this 'theme' of the stall, as they are all very simple with white backgrounds and simple visuals. Of all the ads from the 3 brand, I like these best as the simplistic nature of the ads makes it easy to digest, and the colors are not to bright that it scares men away. Another good point is that the ads also show off the brand's clothes, thus making people want to buy them.
